There are many candidates to claim the designation as “world’s greatest innovation.” The wheel. The printing press. The steam engine.
According to a new book, though, that honor belongs to a mechanised sawmill invented through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Before mechanised sawing, constructing a simple merchant vessel required around ten lumberjacks working for three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, an identical quantity of processed timber could be produced in less than seven days.”
Thanks to their speedy automated cutter, which turned timber into planks using almost no manual labor, Dutch builders could build ships faster compared to anyone else, which sparked a century of Dutch maritime, financial as well as cultural dominance in the continent and the globe.
The First Genuine Industrial Device
The inventor's sawmill, argues the writer, represented “humanity’s first true industrial machine.” A wind turbine turned a gear. One component converted the circular motion to vertical action for the cutting blade. Another component transformed that same rotary movement into a sideway’s movement feeding the log toward the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the log ahead a measured step per stroke.
“Each element seemed modest by itself. The Dutchman’s genius lay in how to integrate them so the machine acted within a precisely synchronized order, cutting with each downward stroke while moving on every return motion. It was a remarkably intelligent use of basic components.”
