Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these drugs need to be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the medication describe a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
