Super Mario Galaxy Lives Up To Its Reputation

In my youth, I missed out on owning Nintendo's Wii system. Admittedly, I played Wii Sports along with several flagship titles during visits to relatives and companions in the mid-to-late 2000s, but I never had a Wii of my own, which resulted in skipping some great entries from Nintendo's beloved series.

One of those games included Super Mario Galaxy, including its successor, was recently remastered then adapted for Switch consoles. The first one was also included as part of the 2020 collector's set Super Mario 3D All-Stars. I appreciated the chance to experience what many consider a top-tier Mario titles in history. The game rapidly captivated me, while affirming that it lives up to nearly two decades of excitement. However, it’s also made me realize how pleased I feel motion and gyroscope controls generally persisted as historical features.

Initiating Galactic Exploration

Following traditional Mario adventure, Super Mario Galaxy begins with Bowser kidnapping the princess and her castle. His armada of spacecraft resembling pirates transport her into outer space, flinging Mario through space during the event. The hero discovers star-like cuties named Lumas as well as Rosalina atop her Comet Observatory. She assigns Mario with tracking down stellar objects to power the Observatory to follow Bowser, and then we’re set free to start discovering.

Galaxy's navigation system provides delight, needing just was playing through several stages to recognize how it receives such praise. Players will notice similarities among veterans of a 3D Mario, and the mechanics remain accessible and straightforward as Nintendo typically delivers.

Innovative Physics Mechanics

As astronomy fan, the environment aligns with my preferences, enabling Super Mario Galaxy to play with planetary forces. Round structures let Mario to run continuously around them recalling Dragon Ball following Bubbles in popular series. When structures approach, he can jump between them being pulled through gravitational force of a nearby platform. Additional areas are flat discs, and often feature rewards underneath, where you may not think to look.

Meeting Familiar Faces

What’s fun about playing Super Mario Galaxy 18 years later includes knowing familiar faces. I had no idea Rosalina made her debut through this adventure, nor that she served as the caring guardian to stellar beings. Earlier in my gaming, to me she was just a frequent choice Mario Kart World driver rotation. Likewise for Penguins, alongside whom I appreciated aquatic sections through introductory ocean area.

Gyroscopic Limitations

The only real drag in playing Super Mario Galaxy currently concerns movement inputs, employed for collecting, aiming, and shooting star bits, bright collectibles found across galaxies. Playing on handheld mode involved moving and adjusting the console for targeting, proving slightly cumbersome. Gyroscopic elements appear frequently during certain jumping segments, where you have to aim the star-shaped cursor at surfaces to drag Mario to them.

Missions entirely needing the motion controls perform optimally with the Joy-Cons detached for better precision, such as the ray-riding stage during early game. I rarely become supportive of gyroscopic gameplay, and they haven’t aged particularly smoothly within this title. Fortunately, by collecting sufficient stars through different stages, these gyroscopic sections can be wholly skipped. I attempted the stage requiring Mario guiding a giant ball across a path dotted with holes, then quickly abandoned after one attempt.

Enduring Gaming Quality

Aside from the awkward motion-based control schemes, there’s really nothing to complain about throughout Galaxy, while its cosmic stages offer pleasure to navigate. While impressive games like Super Mario Odyssey launched later, Super Mario Galaxy stays among the finest and innovative Mario games around.
