Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the ability to challenge specific calls from the official, mirroring the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
